3 leadership styles and effective teamwork

The autocratic leadership style dictates that the team leader makes the decisions alone and convey them to the subordinates to work within the scope of the communicated decisions. Adopting an autocratic leadership means that there is an assumption of authoritative management and full control of the operations of the team. This style is likely to fail with the five colleagues who were already in place. Lack of consultations with them will create a feeling of disrespect and hence they are likely to revolt against the autocratic leadership and hence stifle the efforts of establishing a productive team.

Democratic leadership will provide for consultation between and within the team. Decision making is decentralized, and all the team members are allowed to air their views. Every member’s contribution is taken into account when making the final decision. A democratic leadership style is likely to make all the team members feel appreciated, and they are likely to be more enthusiastic in fulfilling their roles within the team. Sound decisions are made, but it may result in delays in the arrival of the final decisions due to the lengthy consultations involved.

According to dictionaries, laissez-faire leadership definition: it is minimal or absence of administrative interference in the affairs of the private units in reference to freedom of action and individual conduct. In the context of the organizational team, there are both the members who have arrived and others that were already in place. Assuming a Laissez-Faire leadership style could mean that there is a lack of direction within the team. Both the new and experienced team members will have their ways of doing things and hence the team will lack a common direction. There is the need for the team leader to institute rules and regulations that govern the team in the course of daily operations.

In the light of the team in question, the democratic leadership is better than both the autocratic and Laissez-Faire methods of leading. Democracy should have the direction coming from a central top position, but people should be allowed to have individual inputs considered for the team to be an all-inclusive entity.

The autocratic leadership has a place in a working environment that demand error-free results. Employees in such environments are not there to learn but to deliver results as directed by the leaders. The Democratic leadership is highly embraced in modern business organizations, and it is applicable in a wide range of working environments. Laissez-Faire is mainly applicable when dealing with highly-skilled professionals or executives who are motivated by their work and they are able to work without supervision. All the three leadership styles have placed in different working environments.

Establishing an Effective Team

Team leaders are responsible for the evolution of the teams all way from the formation to the performance realization. As a team leader, one should focus efforts on the operations of the team through facilitating the daily activities that form the core objective of the team’s existence. The team-building strategy is important in the initial evolution stages of any team. It is in the forming stage that the team members need to get in touch with each other and make interpersonal bonds amongst themselves. Team leaders can invest time and financial resources in the team-building activities such as retreats.

Communication is among the most key aspects of any successful team. A team leader should build a systematic platform that provides for free flow of information within the team. Communication allows all the team members to be well acquainted with the current developments within the team. When the people are well-versed with the functioning of the team, there is the possibility of going through the storming stage when the team members express the differences among themselves in terms of ideas, opinions, and feelings.

In order to steer the team from the storming to the norming phase, a team leader should actively reinforce and support team spirit and create a positive environment. In the spirit of the team, the leader is supposed to ask for and expect results from the team as a whole. There should be a perfect expression of the individual duties and responsibilities and set of goals and objectives of the different members and the team at large. It is important for the leader to have and impart the vision of success to the team members. The leader should pursue and accept the feedback on the progress and performance of the team.
